Modified Clerkship Exams

  • Approval: Passed by CC, SEC, and UMEC.

  • Exam Format: Exams will feature question styles similar to those in the Legacy curriculum. However, the scope will differ, with all specialties tested in a single, comprehensive examination rather than divided by core rotation.

  • Structure: There will be three exams. Each exam is divided into two parts:

    • Part 1: Written on a Friday.

    • Part 2: Taken the following Friday, exactly one week later.

  • Exam Breakdown:

    • The first exam is formative.

    • The second and third exams are summative; students are required to pass only one of the two summative exams.

  • Tentative Dates:

    • June 2025,

    • October/November 2025,

    • April 2026.

Meeting with Dr. Theresa Wu (Block 2 Discussion)

  • Block 2 was well-organized and substantive, with a strong emphasis on pathophysiology.

  • Students requested more focus on pharmacology in future sessions.

  • The class particularly appreciated review sessions with cases before the OSCE.

Introduction to CARMS Talk with Dr. Busche

  • The VP Academics collected and shared questions and concerns with UME to shape the session's focus.

  • Provided detailed match statistics to give students insights into the CARMS process.

Western Deans’ Meeting in Winnipeg - October 17-19, 2024

  • Attended multiple sessions, including a meeting with the Deans from Western Canadian medical schools (UBC, SFU, UofA, UofC, USask, UofM). Key discussion points included:

    • Structure of clerkship assessments

    • Organization of electives

    • Support systems for students during clerkship

    • Remediation policies for clerkship exams

    • Financial/wellness support available for students in clerkship

  • The VP Academics from the Class of 2026 met with their Class of 2025 counterparts after election to receive detailed guidance on role expectations and portfolio management.

    • Hosted at the Big 4 Roadhouse. SOLD OUT event with 732 attendees

    • Handed out Faculty of Medicine and Physician Assistant wristbands over the course of 3 days and help facilitate ticket resale and refunds

    • Showcase planning underway. Currently reaching out to community partners and sponsorships. Secured $1000 in funding from RBC; $1500 from AMA, 2000$ from CCIS, logistical support from PESJO, CAMSA + EDI funding 

    • Volunteer recruitment started

    • Soft advertisement has started for the event 

    • Submitting event for SU clubs approval

  • Met with the CFMS Director of Global Health with the Class of 2027 incoming VP Global & Community Health to discuss CFMS and CMSA Global Health Planning for 2024 

    • Updated contact list with incoming non-executives 

    • Discussed social media strategies and “nationally organized - locally run” initiative planning 

    • Added a second Local Exchanges Officer position and new Local Officer of Public Health position per CFMS direction

Discussed the upcoming Accreditation meetings with Director of UME Accreditation Dr. Marcy Mintz, alongside the CMSA representatives participating in the Accreditation meetings (c2026 - President, VP Academics S.   • Met with c2026 Student Accreditation Representatives - October 16, 2024. Discussed the logistics of the upcoming Accreditation meetings and how to communicate concerns with the accreditors effectively.

  • J. Thorsteinson officially transitioned into role - handover from UofA 

  • J. Thorsteinson attended AMA BoD meetings for October. Discussed a survey for medical students -> data to be incorporated into advocacy campaign. Focus on family medicine practice. Proofed my M.Kimura.  

AMA Medical Student Advocacy Committee 

  • J. Thorsteinson continued to work on AMA Medical Student Advocacy Committee as the Board Rep in conjunction with other UofA and UofC members. 

  • Declined request to be an official CMSA club as the leadership is based out of UofA

AMA Sub-Committees 

  • M. Kimura, J. Thorsteinson, M. Zarychta, and M. Gandhi ranked applications for the student seat on the Health Informatics Committee and an offer was sent out. 

AMA Committee on Student Affairs

  • Meeting chaired by M.Kimura, October 10 2024. Chair position set to transition to UofA in Jan. 

    • AMA SIG grants to be sent out to independent student applicants. If AMA is unable to get ahold of students the money will be released to CMSA to distribute. 

    • TD Bursary updated values provided to AMA

Alberta Health 

  • Call for applications to Ministry of Health committees sent out to all 3 classes -  Oct 5th 

  • Call for students to meet with Deakin Insight (9 volunteers total) to discuss the RRNP

    • The Rural and Remote Northern Program is a specific financial incentive program to encourage physicians to practice in rural and remote communities in Alberta. We'll be interested in hearing what students know about this, and the role / concerns on compensation for working in rural and remote.

CMSA

Student engagement 

  • J. Thorsteinson drafted a survey with help from M. Kimura and UofA Sr. Governance Rep. Sent off to AMA for feedback and to be formulated into a survey

External Committee 

  • confirmed all non-execs have been contacted for handover

Student Union 

  • SU met with Minister Lagrange and requested assistance gathering direct feedback from medical students regarding the bursary funding announcement. → incorporated into student advocacy survey 

Conference Funding Committee

  • Round 2 funding distributed to applicants (15) and emailed out round 3 application 

  • Posted conference funding information onto media to highlight different funding avenues due to funding constraints 

Municipal Day of Action (Housing Crisis) 

  • Speakers planned, meeting with MLA and Ministers scheduled, and background research completed for launch of meetings Oct. 31

  • Still working on the file to expand the conference funding policy at U of C. Queen’s has made some breakthroughs recently, and we’re waiting to connect with their med soc.

  • Attended a meeting led by CFMS President Sam Alatorre, as well as members of Resident Doctors of Canada (RDoC) and other medical school associations regarding the AFMC Match Tender process, concerns, and next steps for advocacy related to this issue

UpToDate Focus Group - Introductory Meeting - October 9, 2024

  • Attended introductory meeting with Senior Associate Dean of Education Dr. Lisa Welikovitch and student volunteers regarding a focus group exploring the differences and experiences with UpToDate and DynaMed

  • Discussed the specific questions and thoughts that Dr. Welikovitch wanted the focus group to address over the next few weeks

    • Mistreatment policies and processes at each school, how each school ensures anonymity, how changes are enacted, and how retaliation is prevented

    • Concerns surrounding student advocacy and professionalism discipline

    • How to communicate feedback to students in an engaging manner

  • Attended a debriefing meeting with student leadership representatives from other schools to discuss general updates from each roundtable discussion

  • Attended a debriefing meeting with members of the UME to discuss:

    • Next year’s conference will take place in Calgary, with the theme focusing on expansion

    • The UME Deans will meet between now and spring (before iCAM/CFMS SGM) to follow up on discussion items and address takeaways from the meeting

    • Reflections on how the “growth mindset” is incorporated into the RIME curriculum

    • Dissemination of PowerPoint slides to students and the impact on learning

    • Communication to students regarding changes and feedback, from both the UME and CMSA
