Updates

VP Communication - Lexyn

  • Linkedin in the works

    • Can’t make another one because there will be duplicate CMSA pages

    • Requested admin access of the current page

      • There was an immediate option where I could verify the email on file then directly get access - could not figure out what the email was and then I got locked out

      • There was a slower option where I could request admin access from the current admin - I did this because this was my last resort - unsure who is running it atm, will update you if I’m given admin access

  • CMSA Comms Budget

    • Website renewal ($116) - where has this money come from in the past?

      • Raf’s budget 

  • New website coming ASAP!

VP Academics - Alam, Shiva

  • Clerkship Representatives

  • Competency Committee - information to be communicated soon with students, Dr. Bromley provided a breakdown of information to Alam and I 

  • Clerkship Information Session hosted by Dr. Busche in conjunction with Dr. Hutchinson from the SAW office

  • Lack of personal time off in Block 2, wanted to survey what people think 

  • Focus Groups with Dr. Adrian Harvey, suggested hosting more in the future to gauge student opinion

VP Finance - Jennifer

  • Budget Approval!!! 

  • Holding off on investing $20K into GIC until we know what we’re doing for the Bilbies grad funding

VP Events - Anesa

  • Nicknaming ceremony was a success! Fundraised $4250 for the graduation fund. Jersey order form is currently being circulated among students.

  • MMI video filming is underway and set to be ready for the first weekend of interviews. Still recruiting volunteer Student Leaders for interview weekends. Coffee chats will be informal/drop-in style held the night before each MMI interview day as well.

  • Hosting a post-exam celebration on March 1 - Dim Sum & Disney-themed party!

  • Working with Athletics director to host a Dodgeball tournament in April

  • Orientation planning is ongoing - have met with UME to discuss more cohesion among the academic and student events. 

  • Stethoscope ceremony funding is currently unknown - will be scheduling a meeting with Dr. Bromley to discuss among VP Events and VP EDI

  • Multicultural event - getting started and being prepared. Will be run in September. Have a couple of unfilled positions! 

VP Global Health - Genevieve

  • Global Health Town Hall this Thursday, February 15th 2024 from 5:30-7:30pm in HSC G500 - please reply to email to confirm your attendance and any dietary restrictions. 

  • Review of processes for allocating funding 

VP External (Provincial) - Maren

  • AMA meeting on social media use and advocacy on Feb 22nd - let me know if you would like to come 

  • RF forum is March 15th - 7 student delegates are attending 

  • CPSA Council meeting March 6th-8th 

  • AMA sponsorship application due March 10th 

VP External (National) - Maharshi

VP SAW - Khushi

  •  Student Run Tutoring Program is now up and running 

    • taking in submissions from students and the goal is to hold 2 sessions a month 

    • So far the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and we look forward to providing free tutoring services to students 

  • We care committee: Birthday parties each month + personalized card making for everyone 

  • WAR meetings will be up and running soon as new electives are selected 

  • Meeting monthly with SAWH team 

  • Med lounge received a bunch of new supplies which is very exciting

  • Clerkship presentation with Dr. Kevin Bushe and Dr. Carol Hutchinson will be happening in sometime of March and in the meantime, VP academics, and I are collecting questions from the class

VP EDI - Kerry

  • Met with the Palestinian Advocacy Group along with Raf, had a productive discussion and we have some perspectives moving forward that we will discuss during the meeting on next steps

  • Supported nicknaming ceremony and started some light planning for the multicultural event with Anesa

  • Writing a CMSA statement on the current transgender care ban for minors, currently doing consultations

  • Met with the med skills team to talk about increasing SP Diversity

  • Working on a journal club/table talk

President - Rafael

Meeting with Palestinian Advocacy Group - February 4, 2024

  • Met with the Palestinian Advocacy Group with VP EDI K. Yang, and c2025 VP External National S. Alatorre

  • Discussed updates with the Calls to Action and potential next steps for a statement regarding the situation

Meeting regarding EDI concerns within our class - February 4, 2024

  • Met with VP EDI K. Yang to discuss EDI concerns within our class

Meeting with AMBOSS - February 5, 2024

  • Met with AMBOSS to discuss plans about potential AMBOSS involvement at Orientation and running a webinar/discount for our class

Wellness and Academic Roundtable - February 5, 2024

  • Attended WAR meeting to observe and take notes

  • Provided an update on the new Flex Day policy and finding preceptors for shadowing

Meeting with Bilbies - February 5, 2024

  • Met to discuss concerns regarding their graduation funding and whether the CMSA can help cover part of the $8,127 fine associated with changing their venue

Meeting with Shannon Leskosky - February 8, 2024

  • Booked registration, flights and hotel for iCAM 2024 along with VP Academic S. Ivaturi and VP SAW K. Arora

Meeting with Fairware - February 9, 2024

  • Met with Fairware to discuss the Patagonia sale for our class, aiming to run it in the summer/early fall

  • There will be the same colours and designs, as well as ¼-zip sweaters

Trans Health Open Letter - Ongoing

  • Was contacted by a student in c2024 to help disseminate an open letter to students regarding the Alberta Government’s policy announcement regarding gender-affirming care

  • Forwarded the concern to VP Communications L. Iliscupidez, and referred the student to VP EDI K. Yang and VP External Provincial M. Kimura to discuss our CMSA statement regarding the issue

MMI Guide Blurb

  • Worked with VP Communications L. Iliscupidez to write a CMSA blurb for the incoming applicant MMI Guide

Meeting with Dr. Todd Anderson, Dr. Beverly Adams, and Dr. Lisa Welikovitch - TBD

  • The CMSA was invited to attend a meeting with the Dean, Vice Dean, and Senior Associate Dean of Education to follow up on the discussion the CMSA had a few weeks ago

  • No updates from UME or Dr. Bromley regarding payment 

    • Hopefully will have an answer by this week

  • Bilbies VP Events team looking at external sponsors now

  • Hoping to launch ticket sales for grad by end of Feb

  • Tickets are now $55

  • Tickets for previous years have been $100+

  • Ticket prices would increase $11.61 each if full $8k was not covered

  • CMSA Vote to fund the deficit (Is the CMSA willing to pay the fee assuming UME and external funders say no?): 80% Yes partially, 20% No

    • Will discuss how much CMSA will give following the UME decision 

CMSA Fees

  • Was paying CMSA fees ($480) monitored for our class?

    • Jen: Yes, Lauren kept track of everything and chased the incoming class down for payments (I’ll be responsible for this for Co2027)

  • Will it be monitored for Co2027?

    • Yes

  • Marked as mandatory fees in the past - have never had trouble with missed payments

Statement on Israel-Palestine Conflict

15 minutes–Rafael & Kerry

  • Met with the Palestinian advocacy group from the Spinies

  • We have some updates and want to ask the council what everyone thinks our next steps are

    • There is still a push to send out a letter on behalf of the CMSA

    • Hope to meet with all students involved to ensure all perspectives are heard

  • Next steps: consult groups individually in regards to a joint statement, further decisions will be made at the next CMSA meeting

CMSA Statement on Transgender Care for Minors

10 minutes–Maren & Kerry

  • Have been working on a draft statement with regards to the proposed plan for a ban on gender-affirming care for minors

  • Currently doing consultations and feedback (thank you to everyone who has provided some already)

  • Might be doing the statement in partnership with the UoA, there are also statements from other organizations that are currently being planned

  • What do you all want to do in terms of next steps?

    • Obtain feedback from important stakeholders 

  • CMSA Vote regarding releasing this statement: 100% Yes, 0% No

UpToDate Access Renewal

10 minutes – Rafael

  • Our UpToDate access is expiring after the c2025 graduates

  • Do we want to keep providing this service to students? If so, how can we pay for it?

    • YES we should continue to fund this

    • SU Quality money is how we have funded this (partially) in the past

      • Could apply for this again (applications open in the Fall)

      • We still pay $15,000 (~half) out of our budget every year

  • It turns out medical skills have been trying in increase the diversity of the SPs they hire, but it has not be particularly successful

  • Funding criteria: 1. “The event promotes medical student leadership, professionalism, inter-professional and community collaboration, health advocacy, wellness and builds professional core competencies or clinical skills in the profession and is aimed at medical students. 2. Supporting initiatives organized by medical students for medical students and not the general population.
